\nFaridkot (Alexander D’Souza): Guru Gobind Singh Medical College and Hospital, Faridkot-operating under the aegis of Baba Farid University of Health Sciences-has achieved a major milestone in the field of cancer treatment. Under the able leadership of the University’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. (Dr.) Rajiv Sood, the hospital’s expert team has successfully performed a highly complex surgical procedure-Cytoreductive Surgery (CRS) combined with Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC)-marking a first for any government institution in Punjab and its neighboring states.
\nExpert Team of Doctors Achieves a Remarkable Feat:
\nThis historic surgery was conducted under the leadership of Surgical Oncologist Dr. Rohit Jindal and under the guidance of Dr. Parminder Singh Sandhu. Dr. Vimal Bhatt and Dr. Pargat Singh played pivotal roles as key members of this team. Under the supervision of Dr. Sarabjit Kaur, Head of the Department of Anesthesia, Dr. Gurkaran Kaur and Dr. Seema (of the ICU team) provided invaluable assistance in maintaining the patient’s stability throughout this lengthy and intricate operation.
\nWhat is the CRS + HIPEC Technique?
\nThis technique proves to be a life-saving intervention for patients whose cancer has metastasized (spread) to the peritoneum.
\nProcedure: First, all visible cancerous tissue is surgically removed.
\nChemotherapy: Subsequently, heated chemotherapy medication is directly infused into the abdominal cavity at a controlled temperature to eradicate any remaining microscopic cancer cells.
